Title: School Readiness: Integrating Cognition and Emotion in a Neurobiological
Conceptualization of Children's Functioning at School Entry.
Author(s) Blair, Clancy

Publication Date: 2002

Language: English
Document Type: Journal articles (080); Reports--Descriptive (141)
Journal Announcement: CIJSEP2002
Examines the construct of emotionality, developmental relations between cognition
and emotion, and neural plasticity and frontal cortical functioning. Proposes
a developmental neurobiological model of self-regulation skills development,
noting implications for children's school readiness. Suggests direct links among
emotionality, use-dependent synaptic stabilization related to the prefrontal
cortex, development of executive function abilities, and academic and social
competence. (Contains references.) (SM)

Relationships between parental report of children's peer play at home and
indicators of children's school readiness were examined. Behavior ratings and
observational data were collected for preschool children from an urban Head
Start program. Play competencies exhibited in the home environment were significantly
associated with prosocial behavior in the classroom, motivation to learn, task
persistence, and autonomy. (Author)

Relationships between parenting and children's school readiness were examined
within socioeconomically comparable samples of African American and Euro-American
kindergarten children, mothers, and teachers. Although similarities existed
across ethnic groups in the relationships between parenting and school performance,
family income moderated relationship between parenting behaviors and prereading
scores. (Author)

Too many contemporary standards-based tests mischievously represent evidence
of "preparation" for subsequent school levels and courses. School
leaders must not acquiesce to facile answers, bureaucratic mandates, and slogans
asserted to be both "preparatory" and essential. Living richly and
learning informally are appropriate preparation practices. (MLH)

Reviews Pianta and Cox's book, which covers the significance of early school
transitions; the ecology of transitions into and through kindergarten; facilitating
transitions for children from diverse backgrounds; and implications of the kindergarten
transition. Cautions that while the book provides a strong empirical foundation,
it does not provide classroom teachers with practical ideas. (TJQ)

Globalization trends are creating a new world order that in term affects the
lives of children. It is importance to maintain an international perspective
when addressing the issues related to children's readiness to learn. Both public
and private funding are increasingly becoming available to help children begin
school ready to learn, even in economically disadvantaged regions of the world.

in the content-oriented context of what young children should know and be able
to do. (SD)

Target Audience: Parents
Many parents question whether their children are ready for kindergarten and
whether they can succeed. Teachers must determine where students stand as they
guide them through their kindergarten skills. Parents can hone their children's
kindergarten-readiness skills at home by providing creative, challenging activities
that prepare them for the kindergarten classroom. (SM)
